Fireflies
June Photo Collage + Poem
Tiny sparks blink earnestly against sullen shadows pooling under the brush. I'm not just a firefly, I'm a field of starlit wings hovering over a dark map, igniting every milestone, from when I pushed through the warm body of comfort into the cold, night air and the breath inside me became as full and alive as light.
I first read this poem at the Good Reads Summer Solstice Reading. I encourage you to check out an audio recording of it there and listen to some other fantastic summer poems from a variety of lovely poets. To me, this poem perfectly encapsulates June. My husband grew up in Arizona where there were no fireflies, so after we moved to North Carolina his delight in seeing them emerge with the onset of summer every year, makes it all the more magical.

Love this stanza!
"I'm not just a firefly,
I'm a field of starlit wings
hovering over a dark map,"
I really love this one, Sara! Takes the reader right into the night lights with you
